Back Tuck Totorial.
This tutorial is designed as a guide to understanding the technique while using progressive exercises to perform teh movement.
While backflips are very simple in theory. They require a good level of body control and mental commitment.
Let´s start with the set as it will define the quality of yur flip.
The set is a method of measuring your jumping height. To increase this, and improve your backflip technique, do explosive conditioning on your legs to build strength.
Perform this next exercise a few times. - Jump up reaching as high as you can - Keep the body straight - Land smoothly on the same spot.
Simple, right? Once you have gained total comfort and confidence performing that exercise, then we can move on.
When performing a backflip, our set needs to go backwards on a 45° angle. This next exercise will allow you to safely reharse your technique.
You will be needing a spotter. In this case, size really matters. If you weight 170lbs, you might not want a 150lbs spotter as he/she will need to be able to hold your weight
As the spotter. Place your hands in the middle of the back. Not to high, not to low. Find the right spot and maintain contact with it at all times, following as the performer jumps.
Absorb with your arms as the performer jumps leaning onto them. As he/she comes back down, slowly release by gently pushing back to the original position.
As the performer, you jump up on a 45° angle. Reach high while maintaining good body control. Trust your spotter, as you “rebound” off him/her and come back down with a smooth landing.
Repeath the exercise as many times as necessary. Remembering to keep your body straight as your reach high Pick a spot on the horizon and keep your eyes on it.
As always, only move on when you have achieved comfort, confidence and control of the exercise.
The next step will allow you to start working on the timing of your tuck. Performing the pervious exercise bring your knees up ath the peak of your jump.
We are not trying to rotate just yet, The exercise is designed to help you get rid of the fear of jumping backwards, while working on muscle memory.
Understanding the rotation.
The rotation is created by the force generated by your tuck. However, it is not about tucking like a ball, but rather pulling your legs/knees Towards your chest.
Do´not tuck in a ball.
Drive your knees towards your chest.
That will crate the rotation.
Now that we have had a feeling for the initial set and tuck, I am sure you want to move on to the point of this tutorial. Performing a backflip.
Spotting the back flip.
As the performer, the idea is for you to execute the move as rehearsed during the exercises. Your spotter should be ready to assist your rotation or lack of it.
As you are being assisted on your rotation, make sure to spot your landing, start untucking as you spot the ground.
Continue to use a spotter as needed. As you build comfort and confidence, the spotter´s job gets easier. He/she can go from two hand spotting, to one hand spoting. Making sure the hips stay high as you rotate.
Hips are the center of gravity. The longer the hips stay up, the more time for rotation
Once comfortable you can remove the spotter. Make sure to stay commited throughout the entire motion.
Repetition is the key, the more you perform the technique, the better it will be stored in your muscle memory.
Things to keep in mind to avoid “Common Mistakes” - Always set high - Look to the horizon - Delay your tuck - Tuck tight - Spot your landing - Absorb by squating
Recap.
Lastly, remerber to absorb the landing with your legs. Land on the ball of your feet and use your arms to gain stability.
